Implants are a great advancement in dental technology but they are not invincible. Just like natural teeth can get disease around the gum and bone, so can implants. This is caused by that bacteria in our mouths. When the bacteria is not controlled well with good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings then inflammation and disease can occur and result in bone loss. This condition around implants is called peri-implantitis. Prevention with good oral hygiene is essential. An implant still needs careful attention with brushing and flossing and also regular visits to the dentist and/or periodontist.

If you have an implant and have already developed peri-implantitis, it can be treated in a number of different ways. One procedure Dr. Lai may recommend is treatment with the laser. This procedure is often referred to as LAPIP – Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure. LAPIP treatment focuses on eliminating the infection around the implant. We find that patients are very comfortable with this method compared to traditional modes of treatment.

Peri-implantitis is usually symptom free and rarely causes any pain. It is very important to get any disease addressed as soon as it is detected to prevent failure and loss of the implant. After all, it was quite a bit of investment in time and resources to get the at implant in the first place.
